What's The Deal With...?

Surfboard Evolution

What’s the real story with durability between these materials?

Here’s the scoop: epoxy boards generally win the durability contest. The EPS foam is less likely to pressure dent, and the epoxy resin is more resistant to cracking and yellowing than traditional polyester resin. A PU board with a polyester glass job is more prone to dings and pressure dings from your knees and feet. So, if you’re a weekend warrior or your boards live on a roof rack, epoxy might save you some repair bills and keep you in the water longer.

What’s the deal with volume, and why should I care?

Volume, measured in liters, is your board’s overall foam. It’s the magic number for float and paddle power. More liters mean an easier paddle, a more stable platform, and better wave-catching, especially for beginners or in smaller waves. As you progress, you’ll likely drop volume for more maneuverability. Think of it like this: high volume is your reliable friend on a mellow day; low volume is for when you want to really throw the board around.

What does a quad fin setup offer?

Quads are all about drive and power. Four fins—two on each rail—give you insane acceleration out of turns and unbelievable hold in steep, critical sections. They feel faster and more planted than a thruster, especially in hollow waves. You lose a tiny bit of that pivoty release, but you gain a rocket-like feeling under your feet. Great for powerful, carving turns and barrel hunting.

How do I respect the local surf etiquette?

Simple: don’t be a snake. Wait your turn, don’t drop in, and always apologize if you mess up. Paddle wide around the peak, not through the lineup. Observe who’s catching waves—the locals usually have priority. A friendly nod goes a long way. Respect the beach, too. Leave no trace. Good vibes in the water mean better waves for everyone.

Should I plan a surf trip around a specific moon phase?

For sure, the moon pulls more than just the ocean—it pulls the tides. Full and new moons bring “spring tides,“ which are the most extreme high and low tides. This can be awesome for spots that need a super low tide to work, or it can totally swamp them. If you know a reef needs a draining low tide to fire, target those spring tide periods. It’s a next-level planning trick.

How do tides seriously affect my session?

Tides can make or break a spot, bro. Some reefs only work on a low tide, exposing the critical shelf. Beach breaks can get drained out at low tide or swamped at high tide, killing the shape. The key is knowing your spot’s “tide sweet spot.“ A rising tide often offers the best conditions, pushing in fresh swell. Always check the tide chart—it’s as crucial as the swell forecast.
