Live Surf Cams

Surfline Live is a 24/7 glimpse into the world’s surf.

This stream moves through Surfline's global camera network, showing spots where it’s daylight and rated Fair or better.

What's The Deal With...?

Surfboard Evolution

How do the fins on these alternative shapes change the ride?

Fins are the engine, man! A single fin gives you that smooth, drawn-out, pivoty feel. Twin fins (like on a fish) are all about loose, skatey speed—they can feel a bit slidey but are crazy fast. A 2+1 setup (twin with a small trailer) adds a bit of control to that twin-fin speed. And quad fins (four fins) offer insane drive and hold on steeper faces. Swapping fins is the cheapest way to totally change your board’s personality.

Who helped bring surfing back from the brink?

Big shout out to the “Beach Boys” of Waikīkī, especially legends like Duke Kahanamoku. In the early 1900s, this crew revived the ancient practice and shared it with the world. Duke, an Olympic swimmer, became surfing’s global ambassador, giving demos from Australia to California. His aloha spirit and incredible skill sparked the first modern surf craze, proving the stoke was too powerful to be wiped out. He’s the godfather of modern surfing, no question.

Can you really take an “alternative” board on a surf trip?

Absolutely, and you might score more waves because of it! Unless you’re chasing perfect, hollow barrels, a versatile fun shape is a travel weapon. You don’t know if you’ll get pumping overhead or tiny onshore dribble. A good egg or mid-length can handle a wide range of conditions, ensuring you get wet and have a blast every day. It’s about maximizing your water time and enjoyment, not just waiting for the perfect, performance-wave day.

Surf Technique Deep Dive

How does water entry for a duck dive work?

You want a clean, angled spear, not a belly flop. As you paddle to meet the wave, take one or two strong, deep strokes to build momentum. Grab the rails near the front of your board (around chest-width apart), then in one fluid motion, push the nose down at about a 45-degree angle while shifting your weight forward. Your body follows the board’s path under. A clean entry slices through the surface tension and gets you deeper with less effort. It’s all about that smooth, committed motion.

How do I practice the motion without water?

Dryland training is key! Skateboarding transition (ramps and bowls) is the absolute best cross-trainer—it teaches you the feeling of launch and landing. Indo boards and balance trainers help with stability. You can even practice the popping motion on a gym floor or trampoline, mimicking the compression and extension. Visualize the whole sequence, from the bottom turn to the stomp. Muscle memory built on land translates directly to the lineup.

What exactly is an aerial in surfing?

An aerial, or “air,“ is when a surfer launches completely off the top of the wave, becoming airborne before reconnecting with the face. It’s the pinnacle of modern high-performance surfing, blending skate and snowboard influence. You’re essentially using the wave’s lip as a ramp to get skyward. Pulling one off cleanly requires serious speed, precise timing, and a ton of commitment. It’s all about defying gravity for a split second and sticking the landing with style.
