What’s The Deal With…?

Surf Gear Essentials

It’s that grippy, foam sticker you see on the tail of most shortboards and many performance boards. Think of it as a skateboard grip tape for your back foot. Made from EVA foam (like your deck grip) with even grippier raised patterns, it gives your rear foot insane hold. This lets you push, pivot, and crank turns without slipping, especially in critical sections or when your board is wet and slippery. Essential for modern high-performance surfing.

Keep it out of direct sun when not surfing, as UV rays can break down the foam and adhesive. Rinse it with fresh water after saltwater sessions. Avoid getting surfboard oil or solvents on it. If wax builds up on it, use a wax comb or a plastic scraper to gently remove the bulk, then a bit of wax remover on a rag for the residue. With good care, a quality pad should last for years, outliving several board repairs!

If you’re surfing shortboards and trying more radical maneuvers, a traction pad gives you that locked-in confidence. When you’re flying down the line and need to slam a bottom turn or hit the lip, your back foot needs to be planted. The extra grip lets you really drive through your turns and control your board powerfully. For grovelers or small-wave boards, it helps you pump and generate speed more effectively. It’s a game-changer for control.

For sure, you still need wax! The traction pad only covers the tail area where your back foot goes. Your front foot is still on the bare deck or your front deck grip, so you’ll need to wax that area normally. Also, many surfers put a light coat of wax on top of the traction pad itself for extra grip, especially in super hot or cold conditions when the pad’s feel can change. Don’t ditch the wax bucket just yet.

First, match the pad’s arch bar to where your back foot naturally sits—this is key for comfort and leverage. Consider the tail shape: pads come for squash, round, swallow, or asym tails. Look at the foam’s density; softer can be more comfy, firmer gives more response. Brands like Creatures, Octopus, and Pro-Lite have different feels. Don’t just grab the flashiest graphic; think about the function and how it complements your surfing style and board.

Totally a DIY job! It’s one of the easiest board mods. Clean the tail area with rubbing alcohol to remove any wax or oils. Let it dry completely. Peel the backing off slowly, align it carefully (measure twice, stick once!), and press it down firmly from the center outwards to avoid air bubbles. Apply pressure for a minute. The key is a clean, wax-free surface and taking your time with alignment. No need for the shop on this one.
