What’s The Deal With…?

Legendary Surf Spots

You’ll find the full menu, but Sumba is famous for its powerful and hollow reef breaks. Think freight-training left-handers that barrel for days, demanding respect and good technique. There are also some rippable right-handers and, when the swell is smaller, more forgiving beachies. The Indian Ocean pumps in consistent swell, and the SE trades blow offshore like clockwork. It’s heavy water, so bring your A-game and maybe a step-up board. The raw power and consistency are what dream sessions are made of.

Look where you want to go, not at your feet! Your head and shoulders lead your turn. To set a line down the line, look along the shoulder. To set up for a cutback, glance back at the whitewater. Your board will follow your gaze. Keeping your eyes up also helps with balance and spotting sections. It’s all about connecting with the wave’s energy, and it starts with your vision. Don’t get stuck staring at the nose.

Soul surfing is all about the feeling, not the scorecard. It’s ditching the pressure to rip the biggest turn or get the clip. Instead, it’s about that pure stoke of gliding across the water, feeling the energy of the ocean, and being totally in the moment. It’s trimming on a clean wall at sunrise with just your thoughts. It’s the essence of why we paddle out—connection over competition, flow over force. It’s surfing for you, not for the ’gram.

Surf Technique Deep Dive

Dryland training is key! Skateboarding transition (ramps and bowls) is the absolute best cross-trainer—it teaches you the feeling of launch and landing. Indo boards and balance trainers help with stability. You can even practice the popping motion on a gym floor or trampoline, mimicking the compression and extension. Visualize the whole sequence, from the bottom turn to the stomp. Muscle memory built on land translates directly to the lineup.

Your board is a 7-foot projectile. Always maintain control, especially when paddling out. If you bail, cover your head and grab your board—don’t let it fly. Use a leash that’s the right length for your stick. When ditching your board in whitewater, look behind you first. A loose log can seriously injure the grom or uncle behind you. Board awareness is key to a chill session where everyone goes home with all their teeth.

Because surfing is 90% paddling! Strong paddle fitness gets you out back faster, through impact zones, and into waves before they peak. It lets you sit outside and catch more waves with less exhaustion. It also helps with duck diving and overall stability on your board. You can’t surf if you’re gassed from the paddle out. Building that endurance and shoulder strength is the ultimate hack for better, longer sessions.
