What’s The Deal With…?

Surfboard Evolution

They used what the ‘āina (land) provided, brah. After selecting the right tree, they’d use hand-held basalt stone adzes to rough out the shape. Smoother stones and coral blocks were used for sanding, and finally, they’d finish with a polish using natural oils from plants or even the kukui nut. It was a slow, sacred process, often accompanied by prayers. The craftsmanship was next-level, turning a log into a functional art piece through sheer skill and patience.

Wildcards are the exciting wild cards! They’re spots given to local legends, injury comeback kids, or event sponsors’ picks. They let a talented local who knows the break inside-out throw down against the world’s best—imagine a Pipe specialist getting a shot in their home juice. They also allow a top surfer who’s been injured to get back in the mix. It adds a fantastic element of surprise and often produces the most inspiring stories of the event.

Prep is key for a smooth mission. You’ll need a reliable 4x4, extra fuel, and spare tires. Pack a good first-aid kit, plenty of water, and non-perishable food. Bring boards for everything—a step-up for big days, a daily driver, and a fish for smaller surf. Research spots, but embrace getting lost. Learn basic Spanish and carry cash. Most importantly, adopt a flexible, patient mindset. Baja rewards those who go with the flow and respect its rugged, remote nature.

This simply tells you which way the wave is breaking and which direction you’ll ride. A “left” breaks from left to right from the perspective of the surfer riding it (your back is to the wave face). A “right” breaks from right to left. It’s all about your stance and the wave’s direction. Knowing your preferred direction (regular foot vs. goofy foot) helps you pick the peak that sets up your best ride. Some spots are famous for long, perfect lefts or grinding, hollow rights.

Dude, Shaun Tomson is a pure soul from South Africa who changed surfing forever. In the mid-70s, he dominated the pro tour with a radical, deep-tube approach. His style was powerful and committed, making him the 1977 World Champion. Beyond contests, he showed the world what was possible inside the green room, pioneering new lines and techniques. He’s also the brains behind iconic surfwear brand Instinct and a deeply respected elder statesman of the sport, sharing wisdom about life and waves.

It’s more than just a good wave. A spot becomes legendary through a combo of insane consistency, a unique and challenging wave shape, and heavy local history. Think Pipeline’s heaving barrels or Jeffreys Bay’s endless perfection. These places are etched into surf lore because they test a surfer’s skill and courage, becoming pilgrimage sites. The vibe, the local crew, and the stories of epic sessions all add to the mythos. It’s where performance meets passion and pure stoke.
